THE EVOLUTION OF
OUR MECHANICAL
MOVEMENTS
MIYOTA Caliber
82 Series
An ever-evolving movement that has won a broad fan base
Since its 1975 debut, the MIYOTA Caliber 82 Series of mechanical movements
has become a firm favorite with watch brands worldwide.
From the sophisticated appearance of the small seconds to the indirect center seconds
configuration with its traditional, elegantly distributed gear train, the MIYOTA Caliber 82 Series
possesses all the characteristics that make mechanical watches so alluring.
MIYOTA prides itself on listening to its customers and deploying
the latest technologies and ideas to answer their needs.
That symbiotic connection explains the abiding popularity
of the MIYOTA Caliber 82 Series over half a century.
Here are some of the latest examples of the movement’s ongoing evolution.
EVOLUTION 1
Greater design
freedom for
the hands
Increasing the unbalance weight of the hands
Thicker hands and hands made of brass play an essential role in the creation of watches that combine character and legibility. With heavy hands, however, the center of gravity is pushed too far outward, resulting in uneven driving force. This causes the hands to move less smoothly and increases the risk of wear and tear to the movement. At MIYOTA, we tackled this problem by optimizing the sweep seconds pinion friction spring so as to increase the hands’ unbalance weight. Repeated improvements to configuration and materials have enabled us to manage the friction spring with micron-level precision. In consequence, we can use a greater variety of hands across numerous different watch types, including diver’s watches and classic designs.
EVOLUTION 2
Time setting
precise to
the second
Adding a stop seconds mechanism
At MIYOTA, we believe in making practical watches. That is why the debut movements in the MIYOTA Caliber 82 Series had a second hand that kept moving even when the crown was pulled out to the time-setting position. Over the years, however, demand increased for the ability to halt the second hand to set the time with greater precision. The technical solution MIYOTA adopted involved using a plate to press against the second hand brake lever from the outside of the balance wheel to bring the hand to a halt. This elegant system, which takes restart performance at the release of the stop seconds into account, makes for a beautiful hacking mechanism.
EVOLUTION 3
More aesthetically
appealing
movements
Adopting two-piece oscillating
weights for all calibers
The single-piece oscillating weights we used in the early days of the MIYOTA Caliber 82 Series were made of tungsten. But since tungsten is both hard and difficult to polish, adding any sort of decorative element proved extremely difficult. We solved this problem by switching the whole MIYOTA Caliber 82 Series to a two-piece-oscillating-weight specification. As well as opening the door to a wider variety of beautiful designs and finishes, the use of brass—a lustrous and easy-to-machine material—also made it possible for us to mark our oscillating weights with our customers’ logos.
EVOLUTION 4
Greater
customer
choice
Traditional. Elegant. Upscale.
The classic look. An artistic style. Designs that delight at every glance. The MIYOTA Caliber 82 Series wants to share all the charm and profundity of mechanical watches with the largest possible audience. That is why we actively explore all sorts of new avenues while maintaining a focus on producing appealing, easy-to-use mechanical movements.
EVOLUTION 5
The renewed
MIYOTA
brand
Putting our new logotype on our movements
In 2023, MIYOTA took a major step forward when it redesigned its logotype based on the new brand statement: “An Absolute Source of Time.” The logotype expresses our passion, aspirations and commitment to always telling the accurate time. In 2025, we started marking our movements with the MIYOTA logotype in a phased rollout. We believe that our dedication to manufacturing excellence will lead to ever-better outcomes for our customers.
Mechanical watches for as many people as possible
Smart devices can now tell the time as accurately as any watch.
Paradoxically, that only serves to enhance the appeal of mechanical watches
through which people can “feel” the time through sight, sound and touch.
The complex and precise workings of the MIYOTA Caliber 82 Series
work as a bridge—a bridge to connect time and people.
Going forward, it is our hope that ever more people will learn to appr eciate
the unique pleasure, depth and aesthetic appeal of mechanical watches.
To realize that goal, we at MIYOTA will keep listening closely to our customers so that
we can develop new ideas and technologies in response to their evolving needs.
