CRYSTAL OSCILLATORS
Careful monitoring ensures
the quality of each individual second
The crystal oscillator is the most crucial part—the beating heart,
one might say—of any high-precision quartz movement.
An electrical impulse makes the cut crystal vibrate at a stable frequency of 32,768 Hz,
the number of oscillations in a single second.
Because crystal is anisotropic,
its frequency changes depending on the angle and thickness of the cut.
To produce high-quality crystal oscillators,
one must be highly conscious of the original crystal’s orientation and check
its frequency throughout the production process.
Using a wire, the cut crystals are sliced into wafers
which are painstakingly processed into a tuning-fork shape. At MIYOTA,
we are meticulously aware of the crystal’s electrical and temperature properties,
both during processing and after attaching the electrode and sealing it in a case.
We customize the production process for different movements, carefully checking
that the oscillator is vibrating at exactly 32,768 Hz at each individual stage.
The crystal oscillators we make are optimized for the target specifications.
By scrupulously monitoring the characteristics of the crystal
from raw material through to completed product,
we ensure the quality of each individual second.
